CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling is a subtractive manufacturing process that uses computer-controlled machines to remove material from a workpiece and shape it into a desired design. The process involves rotating cutting tools that gradually remove material according to the instructions fed into the machine's computer.
1. design and programming: first, a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) model of the desired component is created. This model is then translated into a CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) file that contains detailed instructions for the CNC machine.
2. set-up: the workpiece is fixed on the machine table and the tools are mounted on the spindle. The machine is calibrated to ensure accuracy.
3. machining: the CNC milling machine follows the CAM instructions and cutting tools start removing material from the workpiece in a series of predefined movements. These movements are carefully controlled by the machine's computer to ensure precision.
4. finishing: once milling is complete, the workpiece can undergo further processing, such as grinding or surface treatment to achieve the desired finish.
