Laser cutting with assist gas, what does it mean?

Laser cutting with assist gas is a common concept in modern sheet metal processing. It involves using a gas in conjunction with the laser beam to enhance the cutting process, influence the cut quality and control the outcome depending on the material, thickness and subsequent processing requirements. Common options are oxygen, nitrogen and compressed air, with each gas having its strengths depending on the application and desired end result. According to laser system manufacturers, assist gases are used to blow molten material out of the cut, influence the reaction process in the cutting zone and optimize quality or speed.
