What is eccentricity?

Eccentric pressing is a method of sheet metal pressing that uses an eccentric press to shape or cut metal using high, repeatable strokes.

The picture shows a pressed detail.

Table of contents

Eccentricity in brief

  • A motor drives a shaft with an eccentric (eccentric disk).
  • The rotary motion is converted into linear motion in the stroke of the press.
  • A tool/punch presses the workpiece against a pad, so that the sheet metal:
    • formas (drawing, shaping)
    • buck
    • cut or hole-punched

Typical characteristics

  • Used for series production of parts with high precision and repeatability requirements, such as fittings, sheet metal parts, fasteners and enclosures.
  • Pressing forces from about 16 tons up to 200-300 tons are common depending on the type of machine.
  • In eccentric press can be equipped with multi-stage tools, allowing several operations (cutting, pulling, piercing, threading) to be done in the same stroke cycle - efficient for larger volumes.
